WAUKESHA, Wis. (May 24, 2010) – Dresser Waukesha, a leading manufacturer of natural gas engines that deliver clean, cost-effective power, is supplying VGF Series F18GSID engines to Northland Power Services for temporary prime power applications in U.S. oilfields.
The F18 engines are being packaged with generators to create 265 kW prime power units that provide an economical interim solution at exploration and production sites in the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana, until grid power is brought in. Northland Power Services, a leading provider of mobile power generation systems for the oil and gas community, has traditionally used diesel-powered gensets as its rental units. However, Northland Chief Executive Officer Dwain Williams says his firm is now supplying the natural gas-fired gensets in response to emerging customer demand for them.
“For those customers who have field gas available in their operations, we’ve seen an increasing demand for gas-fired units as opposed to diesel units,” he said.
Northland selected Waukesha engines for this application because of their reputation as “proven workhorses” along with their size, fuel flexibility and emissions compliance, Williams said.
“For power applications in the basins, we are often asked to provide units in the 265kW range. The F18 is a size that we commonly deploy and fits our portability requirements.” The units are mounted on trailers for easy transport to remote exploration and production sites. Several gensets can also be paralleled together if a customer needs more power than would be supplied by a single unit, he said.
Williams noted that the Waukesha engines are well-known for their tolerance of fuels with varying Btu levels and that when equipped with an AFR controller and three-way catalyst, they comply with state and Federal emissions requirements. Both are important considerations for units that run on field gas and are redeployed many times over during the course of their lives.
“The units we have in operation have performed well and we expect the number to grow,” he said. Currently Northland Power Services has 2700 kW of deployable natural gas power with an additional 2400 kW on order.
